Chapter Nine

Nick

A stranger stood in their midst, but even without having been introduced yet, Nick Lynch knew the authoritative figure had to be Joey Silva’s father. The resemblance was too strong, especially as both stood beside each other, dressed in their tailored blue uniforms with matching patches on the arms. Honor Hills, they read.

Joey stepped forward, addressing the assembled group. “Men, I’d like you to meet Chief Alex Silva, who happens to not only be the fire chief in my hometown of Honor Hills, but he’s also my father. So in this case, honor knows no bounds.”

Joey Silva’s chest puffed with obvious pride at the presence of his father. In the shadow of the fire engines, polished to a point of reflection, the entire White Pine Fire Department was gathered to greet their guest; all except Gil, who still had not been discharged from the medical center four days after the fire that had claimed his home. Nick was seeing yet another surprising side to Joey— not the intimidating deputy chief with something to prove to his inherited recruits; not the intense, passionate lover he’d shared last night with; and not the brave, foolhardy firefighter who chose instinct over common sense when rescuing Gil from his own case of bad judgment. Joey seemed somehow diminished in the physical presence of his father, even though he was the taller, beefier, and thicker of the two men. Alex wore a silver-colored mustache and this morning Joey was freshly shaven, as though reverting back to his boyhood. Nick had a sense that growing up in the Silva household couldn’t have been easy, and following in this father’s footsteps no doubt came with its own challenges.

What he detected in Joey today was vulnerability, a crack in his tough armor, and so seeing him reveal an emotion made Joey that much more intriguing to Nick. Showing he was not just about power, not just a thunderously big cock, that underneath his generous fleece of hair breathed an actual human being.

Which only spelled trouble for Nick.

Nick Lynch had done the one thing he swore he wouldn’t do when coming to White Pine: get personally involved with the friendly residents of White Pine. Not with the complications of another person.

And definitely not with one of the firefighters he worked with. Now, because of a sudden moment of explosive heat, he’d gone and violated all of those assurances he’d made to himself, all while being thrillingly, wantonly violated by the aggressor that was Joey Silva. Not only was he someone he worked with, but he was his direct supervisor. Last night had been wild, exciting, and it had awakened a deep slumber hiding inside him. This morning, though, Joey had been all business in the presence of the rest of the department. Nick was just another cog in a well-oiled machine. But there was always room for improvement, and that explained Alex Silva making an appearance to his neighbors from the north.

Nick stole a sidelong look at Alex.
